Chilled
ceilings are particularly well suited to create a pleasant indoor climate.
With
conventional air conditioners, heat is conducted
from the room by convection i. e. through
the air.
In
contrast, the chilled ceiling cooling load is dissipated from the room by
radiation.
Exceeding
allowable air velocities is impossible with the cooling ceiling system.
A
unpleasant air draft, which arises with a usual air conditioning, does not occurs with
the use of chilled ceilings.
The
operative temperature is composed of the mean surface
temperature of the enclosed components of a room and the indoor air
temperature.
By
the use of chilled ceilings the surface temperature of the
ceiling (radiant temperature) is slightly lowered as the air
temperature.
Thus
the indoor air temperature can be select up to 3°C higher as
the temperature of an only air system with the same perceived
temperature.
Scientific
studies have shown that mental performance highly depends on
the room temperature.
The
best mental performance is achieved at a temperature around 23
° C.
A
temperature rise of 3K already reduced the mental capacity
about 13% and with an increase of 5K it is 22%.
Chilled
ceiling systems create a climate which enhances subjective
well-being and objective supports mental performance.
